KIKUZA SQUASH SEEDS

Cucurbita moschata

The worldwide dissemination of American Cucurbita species in the 16th century led to a broad spectrum of selection unique to the respective countries and municipalities in which and for which they were ultimately grown. Beginning in the late 18th century, American seedsmen brought many of these diverse selections back to American shores, including those grown for generations in Japan.

Kikuza is an old Japanese selection that first appeared in American catalogs in the early 20th century. These small ribbed pale pumpkins are similar indeed to our beloved Black Futsu, but can grow a bit larger (up to 5 pounds with good fertility) and are generally more smooth and uniform in appearance. The flavor of the thick flesh is superlative: intensely sweet and spicy. Perfect for tempura and frites.

These vines can be gently tied to a trellis or coaxed over an a-frame in a small garden. Fairly late to mature, the seeds should be started indoors around 4 weeks before the last spring frost where seasons are short. Cured fruits have only marginal storage qualities, so enjoy them in autumn and early winter.

Packet contains at least 30 seeds.
