ASHWAGANDHA SEEDS

Withania somnifera

An unusual member of the Solanaceae family, Ashwagandha is commonly prescribed in Ayurveda, primarily to men suffering from impotence and general debility. It is more recently marketed as an adaptogen, or ‘Indian ginseng'. However, in contrast to true ginseng, Ashwagandha is a mild sedative and may be prescribed for anxiety and insomnia.

Medicinal preparations of this plant are possibly anabolic, as well as somewhat toxic. Not recommended for use in pregnant women or anyone with a thyroid disorder. Careful research is advised. Several clinical studies are available online.

Ashwagandha plants are as easy to grow as tomatoes. Culture is virtually identical, although these plants are sturdy bushes that may grow to just 3' and do not require support. Start indoors 8 weeks before the last frost: press seeds into surface of moist soil and just barely cover with fine vermiculite; mist generously with warm water; cover with plastic; kept warm (75-85F) and moist in bright light seeds will germinate in one or two weeks. Prick out seedlings to grow on in individual 3" pots or 2" cells. Transplant outdoors into well-drained soil in full sun when night temperatures are above 55F. Consider amending soil with lime if you have particularly acidic soil.

Ashwagandha is hardy to Zone 8. Gardeners in cold climates should take care to harvest roots before frost threatens. Plants that are subjected to freezing temperatures are not suitable for medicinal use. Clean roots carefully and dry thoroughly. Do not consume fresh roots or any aerial portion of this plant.

Easily grown in the garden or in a large container. Preparation is exceedingly simple. Especially recommended to those that currently purchase commercial formulations of this species.

Packet contains at least 100 seeds.
