'Grobbebol' Motherwort
'Grobbebol' Motherwort
GROBBEBOL MOTHERWORT
Leonurus cardiaca 'Grobbebol'
An ornamental selection of this ancient medicinal. Ruffled and lobed foliage is especially attractive in spring. Suitable for rich moist soils in part shade. May spread vigorously where it is happy by both seeds and roots, as many plants in the mint family are wont to do. Deerproof, and very beautiful at the edge of a woodland. An excellent candidate for natural landscaping.
Motherwort is traditionally used to treat cardiac dysfunction, and is clinically proven to be mildly sedative and anti-inflammatory. Per Maude Grieves, there is “no better herb for strengthening and gladdening the heart.” Potentially hypotensive; careful research is recommended. Historically employed as an 'emmenagogue'. Not recommended for use in pregnant women that wish to stay that way.
New spring growth is incredibly rich in minerals and is suitable for making a nutritious infused vinegar. Flowering plants grow to 6' by late summer and may be cut and dried at that time for use in tinctures. Mature foliage is generally considered too bitter for use as a tea. Individual small pink flowers are quite beautiful and may be used fresh or dried for salads and teas.
Germinates easily indoors at 70°F. Press seeds into moist soil, do not cover. Transplant seedlings in spring or early autumn. Take care to keep soil moist until plants are established. Hardy to at least zone 3. Highly recommended.
Packet contains at least 50 seeds.
