MALVA ALCEA VAR. FASTIGIATA SEEDS
Malva alcea var. fastigiata
An impressive selection of common mallow, sometimes listed as Hollyhock Mallow. This variety is more strongly upright and dramatic in the landscape than the species. Ideal for natural landscaping and informal cottage gardens. Best in moist well-drained soils with some shade. Blooms all season in cool maritime climates. Tends to peter out where summers are hot. Short-lived perennial that will self-sow reliably given cold wet springs.
Seeds germinate best with some cold. Sow directly into the garden in late autumn or very early spring, or start indoors. Tuck seeds just below the surface of moist soil and press to keep seed snug. Cover with plastic to maintain moisture. Pop into the refrigerator or place in a sheltered location outdoors, like an unheated screen porch. Seeds will sometimes germinate at surprisingly cold temperatures so be sure to check pots regularly! Prick out seedlings to grow on in individual cells or pots to grow on at cool temperatures in bright indirect light. Transplant well-rooted plants into the garden while soils and nights are still cool. Space plants around 1' apart. Grows to around 4'. Hardy to at least zone 4. Try tucking these plants in front of Chimney Bellflowers and Russian Hollyhocks in a perennial border.
Packet contains at least 50 seeds.
