OYSTER PLANT SEEDS

Mertensia maritima ssp. asiatica

A very peculiar procumbant species commonly found on the cold gravely seashores of the northern hemisphere. Historically known as Sea Bugloss or Sea Lungwort.

Succulent foliage is a striking grey-blue. Plants may grow to 2' across where they are happy. Surprisingly hardy, these plants will overwinter in sharply drained coastal soils even at Arctic latitudes. In North America, they will generally acclimate to garden culture in zones 3-6. Amend soil with sand and gravel if necessary, but do not allow to dry completely.

Long foraged by coastal tribes and sea-faring peoples, all parts of this plant are edible. The tender leaves of this species have a flavor that is overtly oystery. And it would likely be more commonly available in specialty markets if it weren't so shy about producing seeds. And if germinating those seeds weren't such a chore.

These seeds require stratification to germinate. Even with a good stratification strategy, they germinate very erratically. I have had the best luck overwintering seeds outdoors in a sheltered location: tuck seeds just below the surface of moist but loose soil. Press to keep seeds snug, mist generously, and cover with plastic to maintain moisture. Place pot in an unheated porch or cold frame with bright indirect sun in early winter. As in their native habitat, they must have moist but well-drained soil and bright light to germinate after several weeks of near-freezing temperatures. Check for germination frequently. When weather warms in the spring, at least one or two seeds will have germinated. Hold the pot for several weeks or months to give all seeds a chance to germinate. Avoid high temperatures.

Prick out seedlings to grow on in deep 6" containers of well-drained soil. Fertilize with dilute seaweed to encourage root development. Transplant well-rooted plants into amended garden soil in full sun around the date of the last spring frost, or in autumn.

These plants are surprisingly happy to be tucked in amongst other low-growing species. Think perennial salad garden or strawberry bed. Shaded soils are best, as the roots like consistently cool and moist-but-not-waterlogged soil. Drainage is key!

Packet contains at least 5 seeds.
