ALTHAEA CANNABINA SEEDS
Althaea cannabina
Seldom grown but profoundly beautiful, the long wiry stems of this spectacular mallow are practically invisible save for the profusion of pretty pink flowers that appear to float magically in the landscape.
Best in combination with tall annuals and perennials, or allowed to sneak through rose bushes and other flowering shrubs. Established plants may grow to 10'. Blooms until frost. Suitable for cutting. Perfect for the insectary border and sprawling rural or cottage gardens. Unusual. Prepare for frequent inquiries. Plants produce a long and strong fiber that is useful for textiles. Hardy to Zone 3!
Germination of aged seed is easy, although fresh seed may require stratification or at least cool temperatures and several weeks to germinate. Start these seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last frost: sow some seeds just below surface of moist soil, pressing gently to keep seed snug, mist generously and cover with plastic to maintain moisture. Kept moist at around 65°F in bright light germination should begin within two to three weeks. If no germination occurs, pop the pot into the refrigerator for four weeks or more before returning to cool room temperature in bright light. Once germinated, prick out seedlings to grow on in individual 3" pots at room temperature in bright light. Transplant to larger pots as necessary. Harden off before planting outdoors in full or part sun around the date of the last spring frost or in autumn. Water frequently until established.
Long-lived. In some gardens these plants are slow to reach their full potential, taking two to three years to reach maximum height. They love rich fertile soil that is well-drained but receives a big drink at least every few weeks.
Packet contains at least 20 seeds.
