Carthusian Pink
Carthusian Pink
CARTHUSIAN PINK SEEDS
Dianthus carthusianorum
Sleeper European species, named for the Chartreuse Mountains in southeastern France but found throughout central Europe, from Spain to Ukraine. Long strong mostly-bare 18" to 24" stems that have a grass-like effect en masse. More tolerant of rich soils and moisture than much of the genus, making it perfect for meadows and prairie habitats. Flower color ranges from pale pink to violet to very nearly red, but color is typically consistent among all plants in a single location and season. An excellent addition to large informal perennial landscapes, but also holds its own amongst stiff upright Salvias and Daylilies in highly “designed" perennial beds.
Sow these seeds indoors several weeks before the last spring frost: press seeds into moist soil and barely cover with fine vermiculite. Mist generously with warm water and cover with plastic to maintain moisture. Kept warm (around 70°F) in bright light, seeds germinate withing a couple weeks. Prick out seedlings to grow on in individual pots or 2" cells in bright light at warm room temperature. Allow soil to dry slightly between waterings, and fertilize weekly with dilute seaweed emulsion to encourage root development. Harden off thoroughly before transplanting into warm soil in full sun in spring.
Very hardy, overwintering reliably in well-drained soils in zone 3. Ideal planted en mass, so we highly recommend growing by the flat. Plants may be spaced fairly close, around 6" apart. Matures into long-lived healthy clumps in diverse soils and will sometimes self-sow if there is bare soil and sunshine available.
Packet contains around 500 seeds.
