GRECIAN FOXGLOVE SEEDS

Digitalis lanata

This beautiful biennial is native to much of Central and Eastern Europe and is cultivated for the valuable cardiac glycocides present in the first year basal foliage. In the second year these plants throw up a gorgeous 3' spike of sand colored flowers veined in rust with a white lip. Reminds very much of an Acanthus. An elegant addition to the perennial garden and especially enchanting as a cut flower so that its peculiar and subtle beauty can be appreciated up close.

These seeds germinate easily indoors or out at around 65°F in bright light. Indoors, press seeds into moist soil and mist carefully. Cover pot with plastic to maintain moisture. Avoid excessive heat! Kept at cool room temperature in bright light seeds germinate within a couple weeks. Prick out seedlings to grow on individual pots or cells at cool room temperature in bright light. Harden off before transplanting into the garden around the date of the last spring frost or in autumn. Occasionally transplants will bloom in the first year, but generally these plants wait to bloom in the summer of the second year. Incredibly adaptable, these plants will self-sow generously almost anywhere. Take care to cut flowering stems before they set seed if you would like to avoid unwanted volunteers.
