VIPÉRINE DE RUSSIE

Echium russicum

Among the most unique in the genus and super striking en masse, this species is too seldom seen in American gardens. Adapted to the dry steppe of eastern Europe and western Russia. Really fantastic on the dry shale ridges of the Hudson Valley. Hardy perennial to at least zone 5, and probably colder given good drainage.

Long spikes of washed red flowers with peculiar blue pollen. Strong stems do not require support. Established plants sometimes grow to 3', but generally they top out around 2'. These plants are a nice alternative or addition to the Veronicastrums and Lysmachias beloved by Piet Oudolf. Usually blooms June into July in the Northeast.

These seeds typically germinate easily at around 70°F in bright light. Start them indoors and transplant into warm sunny well-drained soils in spring after all danger of frost has passed. Water frequently and fertilize regularly until well-rooted, after which they require very little attention. Very happy in the herb garden with lavenders and catmints.

Packet contains at least 30 seeds.
