Aunt Molly's Ground Cherry
AUNT MOLLY'S GROUND CHERRY
Physalis pruinosa
ORGANIC
The most ubiquitous of heirloom ground cherries, and probably for good reason, this strain has been selected for slightly larger fruits and a sweet flavor that appeals to kids of all ages.
Prostrate plants produce a profusion of husked fruits that fall from the plant when ripe. Fruits should be collected from the ground, not the plant, and can be kept for several weeks in their husks on the kitchen counter. Remove husk before eating. Like most Solanaceae species, all parts of the plant are toxic. Only ripe fruits should be consumed.
Start seeds indoors about six weeks before the last frost: sow seeds just below surface of moist soil; mist with warm water; cover with plastic to maintain moisture and temperature; kept warm (80°F) and moist in bright light seeds will germinate within two weeks. Prick out seedlings to grow on in individual 3" pots in bright light and warm room temperature. Transplant outdoors into full sun when nighttime temperatures remain above 55°F. Plants will grow to just under 1’, so be sure they are planted where they won't be shaded by other crops. First harvest in about 70 days.
Closely related to tomatillos, these plants will likewise produce an enormous amount of food. Fruit is suitable for pies and preserves. Tolerant of most soils. Requires full sun. Will self-sow prodigiously. An excellent candidate for permaculture.
Packet contains at least 30 seeds.
