Looking very much like the tomatoes depicted in herbals hundreds of years ago, Purple Calabash is a tomato that is exceptional in both appearance and flavor. Fruits are deeply ribbed, frequently lobed, and colored in shades of red wine, heavy on the Sirah. Flavor is intense, and holds up very well to cooking, making a superlative pasta sauce. Plants are prolific and unaffected by drought.

Purple Calabash, or a very similar tomato now lost to time, was grown by Thomas Jefferson at Monticello.
