Rio Grande Verde Tomatillo
Rio Grande Verde Tomatillo
RIO GRANDE VERDE TOMATILLO
Physalis ixocarpa
Big green husked fruits on compact determinate plants that rarely grow taller than 2'. Fruits are not as large as those of Cisineros, but still substantial and produced in abundance. Short sturdy plants are much more appropriate for small gardens. An excellent selection for salsa gardeners that wish to produce and preserve a lot at once.
In Mexico, green tomatillos are harvested immature, just as soon as the fruits break through the husks. These fruits have a fantastic tart citrus flavor that makes the perfect vehicle for heat in both raw and roasted salsas. Mature fruits are mostly yellow and sweet.
Start tomatillos indoors 4-6 weeks before your last spring frost. Culture is similar to that of tomatoes. Kept warm and moist in bright light, seeds will typically germinate in a week or two. Transplant seedlings into individual 3" pots to grow on at warm room temperature in bright light. Harden off carefully before transplanting into warm garden soil in full sun.
Tomatillos are easy to grow, and rarely require fertilizer or any attention at all. Water plants just until established. Dioecious; grow at least three plants together to ensure pollination.
Packet contains at least 50 seeds.
