ZIMBABWE BIRD PEPPER
Capsicum frutescens
Though native to the Americas, Capsicum species are beloved and cultivated worldwide. C. frutescens is the preferred species in much of Africa, from whence this selection originates. Very compact and attractive 1' plants produce hundreds of tiny pointed pods that ripen from green to red.
These tiny red peppers are used both fresh and dried. Fantastic sweet and tangy flavor. Heat is between 30,000 and 60,000 SHU depending on culture. Ripens in about 90 days. Tolerates cool wet weather. Suitable for containers. Just a lovely little plant.
Pods dry very easily in the open air. Little glass jars of these dried peppers make fantastic gifts. Just one or two is enough to contribute terrific heat and flavor to a pot of curry or soup. They're also easily ground and used like paprika. Just one plant will produce enough pods to last the winter in most kitchens. Perfect for balcony and patio gardens.
Seeds must be sown indoors at least 12 weeks before the last spring frost. Tuck just beneath the surface of moist soil, pressing to keep seed snug. Mist generously with warm water and cover with plastic to maintain moisture and temperature. Kept very warm (at least 85°F) and moist in bright light, seeds begin to germinate within three weeks or so. These seeds can be very slow indeed to germinate. Be patient.
Grown by Farmacie Isolde.
