This understandably ubiquitous annual could just as easily be listed with the salad greens if not for its profound ornamental value. Striking blue-green lily pad leaves and deep scarlet flowers on attractive mounding plants. Both foliage and flowers are edible and delicious, having an addictive peppery flavor.

Easy to grow. Sow indoors or out in spring. Can be slow to germinate in cool soils. Transplants sometimes look sickly and sad for a few weeks before perking up. Nasturtiums bloom most prolifically in poor soils. Nitrogen-rich soils will produce lots of delicious succulent foliage but few flowers.

Nasturtiums are perfect for containers and balcony gardens. They are quite tolerant of neglect. Very nice companion plant for onions and leeks. Lovely contrast with golden-leaved greens in the salad garden.
