LEMON GEM MARIGOLD
Tagetes tenuifolia
Sometimes referred to as Signet Marigold, this fragrant, edible, drought-tolerant and deer-resistant species deserves a place in every garden. Filigreed foliage is strongly citrus-scented and small luminescent yellow flowers have a light flavor that is reminiscent of anise seed and orange peel. Flowers hold up well, making attractive additions to salads and delightful decorations for cupcakes, cocktails and sundaes.
Start indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost: press seeds into the surface of moist soil and dust with additional soil or fine vermiculite. Mist generously with warm water and cover with plastic to maintain moisture and temperature. Kept warm (70°F) and moist in bright light, seeds will germinate within 2 weeks. Transplant seedlings to individual cells or containers when they have two sets of true leaves. Keep warm and in bright light, watering infrequently until hardening off and planting outdoors in full sun and well-drained soil after all danger of frost has passed. Pinch seedlings to encourage branching.
Lemon Gem Marigolds are precocious bloomers and will continue flowering prodigiously until the first frost. They are fantastic companions in the vegetable garden, although they truly shine in dry, neglected soils. Tuck them here and there in the herb garden. Suitable for containers, but be sure to pinch frequently to encourage a nice round shape. Water sparingly.
Packet contains at least 50 seeds.
