TALL VERBENA SEEDS

Verbena bonariensis

Technically a perennial in zone 7 and warmer but grown as an annual in the north. Tiny violet pink flowers clustered atop tall wiry stems that can grow to 6' but more often just 4'. Attracts diverse pollinators and especially butterflies. Very happy in poor dry soils. An excellent addition to the insectary border.

This species is often frustrating to germinate. The seeds sometimes requires stratification, and other times will germinate readily. We recommend sowing in flats outdoors in late winter or very early spring. Seeds may also be sown indoors: sow onto moist soil, mist carefully and cover with plastic to maintain moisture before refrigerating for at least four weeks before returning to room temperature in bright light. Do not attempt to use heat. Seedlings are fast growing and transplant easily. Tough as nails once established. Fairly deer-resistant. Will self-sow where it is happy.
