Erbette Perpetual Spinach
Erbette Perpetual Spinach
ERBETTE PERPETUAL SPINACH SEEDS
Beta vulgaris ssp. cicla var. flavescens
ORGANIC
This hardy biennial will keep you in sweet cut-and-come-again greens through the heat of summer, all of autumn, and into the winter in mild climates. Erbette is an Italian vegetable that most closely resembles chard, although the taste and texture are far superior. It is suitable for salad, but really shines in quiche and stuffed pasta.
Erbette will thrive in full sun or part shade in well-drained soil and requires very little attention once established. Plant it in the garden where it can be easily accessed and frequently harvested. Attractive shiny green leaves rarely grow to more than 1'.
Sow directly into the garden as soon as soil can be worked, or start indoors: sow seeds in individual pots or cells, about 1/4" deep in moist soil, pressing gently to keep seed snug; mist generously and cover with plastic; kept warm (65-70F) and moist in bright light, seeds will germinate in a week; uncover and grow on in a cool location and bright light. Seedlings should be hardened off and transplanted in early spring. Plants should be spaced at least 6" apart. Erbette will withstand light frosts, but protecting it from freezing weather, especially in the spring, is advised.
For container culture: sow seeds directly into the container and follow germination instructions as stated above. In a container, Erbette will require frequent watering in the heat of summer. Keeping the pot in partial shade is advised. Multiple plants can be sown in a single large container. Thin plants to 6" in all directions.
Packet contains at least 100 seeds.
