SWORD LEAF CELTUCE SEEDS

Lactuca sativa var. asparagina

This ancient lettuce has an unusual sweet flavor with a fantastic crunchy texture. Excellent in soups and stir fries. Thin swordlike leaves form an attractive tidy rosette just before lurching out of the ground on thick tasty stems. Easy to grow and entirely edible at any stage of growth.

Tolerant of both extreme heat and cold, this selection can be sown all season, save for the hottest days of summer when it will simply refuse to germinate. Spring sown plants will produce the best stems. Autumn sown plants will produce the sweetest crispiest leaves. Though this is a very hardy selection, we recommend Pink Asparagus or Winter Marvel Lettuces rather than Sword Leaf for overwintering in the coldest climates.

Take care to mark direct sown seeds as the very young plants look like common garden weeds.
