TOM THUMB LETTUCE SEEDS
Lactuca sativa
Old and fairly ubiquitous, but for good reason. The tidy little heads of Tom Thumb are perfect for dressing up with chives and violets and a sweet poppyseed vinaigrette in early spring. The easiest ever “side salad".
Small enough to tuck into containers and windowboxes, these plants will grow to no more than 6" across and will happily tolerate crowding. Seeds may be sown willy-nilly in the garden as soon as the soil can be worked and begin heading almost as soon as they sprout. Try them between rows of transplanted onions.
Best in early spring and autumn, but more tolerant of inconsistent weather than Gem or Tennis Ball lettuces. We really fell hard for this variety in spring of 2020, when winter cold turned to scorching summer heat seemingly overnight. Tom Thumb stood unbothered for weeks while almost every other spring lettuce suffered.
Ready to harvest in about six weeks after sowing.
Packet contains around 1000 seeds.
