ABENAKI CALAIS CORN
Zea mays
ORGANIC
Beautiful flint corn grown by the Abenaki tribe of northern Vermont. Frequently depicted in historic horticultural literature. Produces long thin ears in shades of gold and maroon. These narrow ears dry easily in the field, even in a cool short season. Excellent flavor. Makes gorgeous cornmeal. Perfect for rustic polenta and grits.
In spring tuck seeds 1"-2" below the surface of warm (65°F) fertile soil in full sun. Do not plant too early, as these seeds will only rot in cold damp soils. And do not skimp on nitrogen-rich soil amendments. Water frequently until germinated and well-rooted. Tall stalks grow to 7' and typically produce at least two 8"-10" ears. Allow to dry completely in the field before harvesting.
One of the few varieties of corn truly adapted to culture in the Northeast. Reliable even in less than ideal conditions. Fertility is key. Amend with lots of composted manure or fish meal. Planting in blocks rather than rows is also recommended.
Packet contains at least 50 seeds.
