MARSHMALLOW ‘ERFURTER’ SEEDS

Althaea officinalis ‘Erfurter’

What we call “marshmallows” were originally a medicinal confection for ailing children and invalids procured from the pulverized roots of Althaea officinalis. This strain is selected specifically for medicinal use and will produce superior extractives.

This beautiful perennial mallow is native to marshes of Europe and is a powerful anti-inflammatory. Plants grow to 4'-5' and prefer rich moist soils. Foraged and cultivated for thousands of years, all parts of this plant are edible and medicinal and suitable for both internal and external use.

One of the most valuable and soothing medicinals available, Marshmallow is also a good alternative to Slippery Elm, which is currently being decimated by disease and unethical wildcrafting. Pretty pink flowers may be candied. Produces an interesting vegan alternative to egg whites. Gentle enough for use with children.

Germination of these seeds can be slow and erratic. They are perhaps best sown outdoors in very early spring, while soils and temperatures are still cool. Or start indoors several weeks before the last frost: sow seeds just below surface of moist soil, pressing to keep seed snug and mist generously. Cover with plastic to maintain moisture. Kept cool (around 50°F) and moist germination may begin in 2-3 weeks. Bring to room temperature to stimulate further germination and growth. Avoid excessive heat, as this seems to prevent germination. Prick out seedlings to grow on in individual deep pots. Growth is very fast once seedlings are well-rooted. Transplant outdoors into rich soil in full or part sun on or around the date of the last frost. Water frequently until established.

Highly recommended.

Packet contains at least 300 seeds.
