HOKUS GHERKIN SEEDS

Cucumis sativus

ORGANIC

An organic parthenocarpic cucumber bred for greenhouse production in Europe, but easily grown in American gardens. Tall vines are very productive, as the flowers do not require pollination to produce fruit. Without a pollinator, the cucumbers will be truly seedless. If other cucumber plants are grown in the same garden at least some of the fruits will inevitably have seeds, but picked for gherkins this is of little consequence. The best selection we have grown for truly tiny cornichons.

Start these precious seeds indoors about 4 weeks before the last spring frost. Tuck seeds just beneath the surface of moist soil, pressing to keep seed snug. Mist generously and cover with plastic to maintain moisture. Kept warm (around 70°F) and moist in bright light, seeds germinate in just a few days. If sown into a communal pot, prick out seedlings to grow on in individual cells or pots in bright light at warm room temperature. Fertile weekly with dilute seaweed and/or fish emulsion. Harden off very thoroughly before transplanting into warm fertile soil in full sun. Allow soil to dry out slightly before transplanting to avoid root disturbance. Mulch generously. Water frequently until established.

Best trained onto a tall trellis. Vines will grow to around 6'. Pick frequently for continued fruit production, especially if there are other cucumbers nearby, as the plants will then put all their energy into seed production.

Packet contains at least 10 seeds.
