Aurinia saxatilis 'Sulphureum'
Incorrectly labeled as ‘Alyssum' in several catalogs, this species is an important addition to any garden for several reasons. It is one of the first plants to bloom in the spring, providing nutritious forage for pollinators. It is reliably perennial and easy to grow, requiring only full sun and poor well-drained soil. And it is mercifully ignored by all manner of destructive critters, including deer.
Mature plants grow to around 1' in all directions and blooms in a pretty shade of soft sunny yellow. Hardy to at least Zone 3.
Though some of these seeds will germinate promptly without any special treatment, they germinate best with stratification. Sowing in situ in late winter is also usually sufficient. To start seeds indoors, press seeds into moist soil and just barely cover with additional soil or fine vermiculite. Mist generously and cover with plastic. Place pot in the refrigerator for 2-4 weeks before returning to cool room temperature in bright light. Seed should begin to germinate in around two weeks. Alternatively, place the pot in a sheltered location outdoors in winter. Take care to keep soil moist and check frequently for germination. Seeds will typically begin to germinate during the first warm days of early spring. Uncover seedlings and provide bright light. Transplant well-rooted seedlings outdoors into a sunny well-drained location around the date of the last frost.
Packet contains at least 50 seeds.
