Dianthus pinifolius

Rare dryland species native to the Balkans. Clusters of little ruby red flowers with purple pollen top wiry 1'-2' stems. Elegant but incredibly tough and drought tolerant. Fantastic with Grosso Lavenders. Lightly scented flowers are edible. Excellent cut flowers. An especially photogenic butterfly magnet.

Start indoors 8 weeks before the last frost. Germinates best in bright light at 75°F. Slow growth initially. Transplant well-rooted plants into warm soil in full sun. Prefers fertile but dry or rocky soil. Will not overwinter in soggy soils. Long lived where it is happy. Very nice tucked into the herb garden. Moderately deer resistant.
