EARLY HIBISCUS SEEDS

Hibiscus sabdariffa

Bright red Hibiscus calyxes make a beautiful and delicious tea. Unfortunately, because most hibiscus species are day length sensitive, flowering will seldom begin until autumn in northern gardens, by which time the plants may be decimated by frost. These seeds produce plants that will begin flowering and producing calyxes as early as July if started indoors in early spring, even at northern latitudes..

Seeds germinate easily indoors: sow about 1/4" deep in moist soil, pressing to keep seed snug; mist generously with warm water and cover with plastic; kept warm (75°F) and moist seeds will usually germinate in a matter of days. Seedlings grow very quickly and should be transplanted very soon after germination to individual 6" pots to grow on in bright indirect light and warm room temperature. Water frequently. Transplant outdoors into warm soil in full sun after all danger of frost has past.

Vigorous plants produce gorgeous shrubs to 5' in just a matter of months. Prefers to grow in rich moist soil in full sun. Suitable for large containers. Bring indoors before a killing frost and plants will continue to bloom for several weeks. Flowers are delicious and edible, but the glossy red calyxes are preferred for tea. Harvest promptly, pop out the green seed pod, and dry completely before storing in an airtight tin or glass jar. Boil with ginger for around 20 minutes for a superlative hot or iced tea.

Packet contains at least 15 seeds.
