LEMON DRAGONHEAD

Dracocephalum moldavica

ORGANIC

There are several species of Dracocephalum worth growing, but none so useful for tea as lemon-scented D. moldavica. These tough annuals will tolerate deer and drought and have beautiful edible blue flowers that are beloved by bees and butterflies. Perfectly happy in a pot. Frequent harvests will only encourage more growth and lots of pretty flowers.

Presumed to be native to Turkey, traditional use has long been widespread throughout Eurasia. D. moldavica is listed as having several medicinal applications, but the most interesting and promising of these is as a treatment for altitude sickness. This superior strain has been selected for medicinal use and is suitable for distillation.

Easy from seed. Sow seeds outdoors in well-drained soil in full to part sun on or around the date of the last frost. Water frequently until germination occurs. Thin to at least 8" apart. Or start indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost: press seeds onto surface of moist soil and mist with warm water. Cover with plastic to maintain moisture. Kept warm (70°F) and moist in bright light seeds will germinate in a week or so. Prick out seedlings once they have two sets of true leaves to grow on in individual 2" cells or 3" containers at room temperature in bright light. Transplant outdoors into well-drained soil after the last frost.

The distinctly serrated leaves of Lemon Dragonhead may be used fresh or dried for a very pleasant tea. Plants grown in dry soil in full sun will have higher essential oil content. Dried leaves will maintain their fantastic scent and flavor for several months in a jar or tin. Flowering does not diminish the value of the foliage. Growers with small stills will want to harvest plants during the first flush of flowering.

Highly recommended.

Packet contains at least 300 seeds.
