Hibiscus trionum

One of our favorite little weeds, the pretty flowers of this species cheered me during the excruciatingly dry growing season of 2022, popping up in the paths between myriad unhappy vegetable plants. An unbelievably adaptable species, it is found on every continent, and in wildly diverse soils and climates. It is a persistent agricultural weed, but not one that gardeners need mind. It is charming and harmless and even edible (although insipid). The extraordinarily deep roots do not compete with common kitchen garden occupants. In the flower garden it is a reliable volunteer, filling in gaps here and there to great effect. And although each flower lasts for mere hours, there are perhaps dozens more on each plant ready to bloom in succession all season long given sunny weather. A merciful delight during a relentless drought.

Sow these seeds where they are to grow in spring, or start in flats. Germinates easily in warm moist soil in bright light. An annual that will self-sow indefinitely. Seeds remain viable for many years, both in and out of the soil. Once you have this little beauty in your garden, you always will, so do plant mindfully.
