Peculiar perennial plantain that is traditionally grown as a winter vegetable in Italy. Excellent nutty flavor and crunchy succulent texture. Delicate rosettes of narrow horned leaves are best harvested young. Will stand throughout winter in mild climates. Substantial enough for stir fry. Great with chicories and arugula in winter salads. Suitable for permaculture.

Sow seeds directly into the garden in very late summer for autumn and early winter harvests. May be started indoors in late winter and transplanted as soon as soil can be worked in spring. Be sure to cut before the plants begin flowering. Worth experimenting with all season in cool maritime climates. Tolerates saline soils.
