GOLDEN ORACH SEEDS

Atriplex hortensis

ORGANIC

Listed in old horticultural catalogs as “Gelbe", the delicate leaves of this selection are a stunning glowing yellow-green. Orach is an ancient food crop that, according to Vilmorin, was once a garden stalwort in France, and is still a relatively common substitute for spinach in arid mountain regions. It can be grown successfully in highly saline soils. Though this selection is perhaps less overtly ornamental than Magenta Magic or Triple Purple, plants are striking and attractive and a nice addition to an edible landscape. New leaves are produced even as the plants bloom, providing a long season of harvest.

Seeds may be sown directly into the garden in spring. In the Northeast consider sowing orach after your spinach crop is spent. Harvest whole young plants, or individual leaves over several months. Prepare like spinach. Fantastic salty flavor. Texture is less succulent than other selections, but mature leaves are more tender.

An old Abundant Seeds strain now maintained by Wild Garden Seeds.

Packet contains at least 100 seeds.
