Red Burgundy Okra
Red Burgundy Okra
RED BURGUNDY OKRA
Abelmoschus esculentus
This impressive selection was first introduced to gardeners in 1983. Not only are pods especially tender and delicious, but the whole plant is a striking ornamental. In a hot summer these plants will produce a profusion of dark burgundy pods that are absolutely fantastic deep fried or in gumbo (which is actually a name for okra in its native Africa). In cool maritime climates production can be disappointing, but these attractive plants are still worth growing for their unique color and flowers.
The value of Red Burgundy Okra as an ornamental cannot be overstated. Plants feature stunning red stems and beautifully cut foliage. Large hibiscus-like flowers are an incredible shade of glowing linen yellow with a deep burgundy eye. Grows to about 4' in height. Nice with sunflowers and chimney bellflowers. An excellent companion for melons in the kitchen garden.
Okra prefers to grow in deep moist soils in full sun. It will not grow in shade. In short seasons, Okra may be started indoors several weeks before transplanting outdoors after the last frost, when soil temperature is around 70°F. Water frequently until established and regularly thereafter. Where it is happy it will produce pods in as little as 60 days.
Packet contains at least 100 seeds.
