TRUE MOTHERWORT SEEDS

Leonurus cardiaca

ORGANIC

One of the most useful of herbs, especially for women. Thought to be native to shaded forest margins of Eurasia, but is now found growing wild throughout the temperate and subpolar regions of the world. This organic selection is appropriate for medicinal use.

Prefers rich moist soils in part shade, but is highly adaptable. May spread vigorously where it is happy by both seeds and roots. Deerproof, and surprisingly drought-tolerant once established. Ideal for permacultural landscapes.

Motherwort is an ancient medicinal, traditionally used to treat cardiac dysfunction and, according to King's 1909 American Dispensatory, “pains peculiar to females". This species is clinically proven to be mildly sedative and anti-inflammatory. It is a gentle but effective nervine. Per Maude Grieves, there is “no better herb for strengthening and gladdening the heart.” Potentially hypotensive; careful research is recommended. Historically employed as an ‘emmenagogue'. Not recommended for use in pregnant women that wish to stay that way. An excellent post-partum tonic. Highly recommended for symptoms of peri-menopause.

New spring growth is incredibly rich in minerals and is ideal for making a nutritious infused vinegar. Flowering plants grow to nearly 5' by late summer and may be cut and dried at that time for use in tinctures. Foliage is generally considered too bitter for use as a tea, although it is made more palatable in combination with Lemon Balm and a generous spoonful of honey. Individual small pink flowers may be used fresh or dried for both tea and salad.

Germinates easily indoors at 70°F. Press seeds into moist soil, do not cover. Transplant seedlings in spring or early autumn. Take care to keep soil moist until plants are established. Hardy to at least zone 3. Highly recommended, because who isn't afflicted with excessive anxiety these days.

Packet contains around 300 seeds.
