BRONZE FENNEL SEEDS

Foeniculum vulgare var. purpureum

Reliably perennial in most gardens, this fennel features curious dusky bronze foliage that is actually closer to copper when it first unfurls. Absolutely magical color and texture in the edible landscape or insectary border.

An heirloom that originally came from the old Abundant Life Seeds and is currently maintained by Frank Morton and Wild Garden Seeds. Suitable for use as an herb or vegetable, although the flavor is not as sweet as Sweet Fennel, nor is it as aromatic and savory as Wild Fennel. Still a worthy addition to the garden and the salad bowl.

Plants bloom late in the season once they are established, and the contrast of bright yellow pollen against the bronze fronds is breathtaking. Attracts Swallowtail butterflies and other valuable pollinators. Adaptable, but best show in frequently-watered well-drained soils in full sun.

Seeds may be sown directly into the garden around the date of the last spring frost. They may also be started in flats and transplanted around the same time. Water frequently until established. Young plants are stunning and great for herbal nursery sales.
